Bank Category Rules

Creating a rule based on the category assigned by your bank

When updating the category for a transaction, you can create a rule based on either [1] the Transaction Name or [2] the Bank Category. You can learn more about using transaction names to create rules here.

The Bank Category is a transaction's likely type and category determined by your bank. For example, transactions from Whole Foods are labelled as "Supermarket & Groceries." This means they are classified as Regular transactions in Copilot and assigned to the default Groceries category.

If you choose to create a rule using the Bank Category, Copilot will change all transactions with the same Bank Category to the selected category. For example, if you choose to use Bank Category when updating a Whole Foods transaction, you'll likely see merchants like Trader Joes, Morton Williams, and other grocery stores listed as well.

Both Transaction Name Rules and Bank Category Rules will impact historic and future transactions and they cannot be undone. Please review the transactions listed when creating the rule to confirm it's being applied to the desired transactions.

On the iOS app, you'll be prompted to create a rule every time you update a transaction's category, unless the transaction is associated with a Recurring.

On the Mac & Web apps, you'll be prompted to create a rule when you update a transaction's category to a different category, unless the transaction is associated with a Recurring.
